Hic! That’s the tenth hiccup you’ve had since dinner.”Wonder why? Well, blame what’s called the diaphragm. The diaphragm is spectacular. It pulls down when you inhale and pushes up when you exhale to release the air in your lungs. Sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated, and when this happens, it pushes up in a jerky way that makes your breath come out differently from how it normally does. When this irregular breath hits your voice box, you’re left with a big hiccup.
If you’re like me, you don’t favour the hiccups and really want to get rid of them as soon as you can. Ever imagine being in a meeting once you’ve had your lunch and suddenly you have hiccups? How embarrasing would that be if it was a really important meeting. What about if you were in an exam and, of course, it’s really quiet and the next thing you hear is someone going “Hic!”? Imagine if you were them. That’s the embarrasing factor!
Anyhow, there’s really no need to feel embarrased. Whatever the situation, just let them know you’re diaphragm’s irritated! There are many cures to the hiccup but something I recently learned from my partner is the power of the 7 sips. 7 sips of water in one go will relieve the hiccups and stop altogether. I don’t understand the reasoning behind it just yet, but I’ll soon find out. If you know it, feel free to share it by posting a comment. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
